Emperor Jaffas stood up, looking down at the four standing traitors from the dais. The silence in the throne room was thick with tension, which was finally cut by the emperor’s sharp voice.
“You will kneel.”
The four conspirators dropped to their knees with no further prompting. The emperor watched them through narrowed eyes. “I have been as merciful as I could hope to be,” he said. “And you have spat in my face. I do not believe in second chances.”
Emperor Jaffas inhaled slowly and spoke on final word, a word laced with all his power.
“Die.”
He stood there, watching them die in agony, fighting to disobey a voice that could not be disobeyed. Then, silently, he swept past the four cooling bodies and out of the throne room, his empress trailing behind him. He didn’t collapse until he was safely back in the privacy of his quarters. Deanna dabbed at the blood dripping from his nose and made soothing noises, stroking Jaffas’ hair.
“You did what you had to do,” she whispered.
