“You don’t understand!” Franklin snarled. “You’ve always looked like this, but I-” He stopped himself when he finally caught Jake’s expression. “I didn’t mean that,” he said quickly.
Jake offered Franklin a smile that wasn’t really a smile. “For a telepath, you sure are pretty dense, Frankie.” The orange skinned boy gently put down the weights he had been lifting. “Finish the sentence.”
“Jake…”
“Don’t be a wuss. People have been telling me that I’m a monster my whole life. You might as well go ahead.”
Franklin held up his hands in the universal sign of surrender. “You’re not a monster.”
“I know that.” Jake dusted his hands off. “I’m fine with the way I look. It’s everyone else who has a problem. Like you.”
