“Thanks for coming with me,” Rogue said while Wanda did one last check of her make-up. “I hate goin’ to these things alone.”
“Then why go at all?” Wanda asked, running her hands over her skirt. Rogue just shrugged, and Wanda suggested she make sure Toad wasn’t waiting somewhere close by to pounce.
“Coast is clear,” Rogue announced a few minutes later. “Lets vamoose.”
Everyone else that was going had already left for the dance; Rogue and Wanda had planned it that way. It made it easier to avoid the unwanted attentions of certain persons.
But someone was still waiting for them, in the foyer.
Jono had managed to avoid all discussion of school dances by dint of his lack of mouth, though both Xavier and Jean insisted that he could talk if he wanted to. He was one of the few Xavier students who didn’t attend Bayville High thanks to his mutation. But he had been around for Wanda and Rogue’s discussions and planning sessions, and now he was standing in the foyer in a borrowed tux, a scarf wrapped tightly around what was once his face.
“What are you doing?” Wanda demanded incredulously, pausing on the stairs. Jono struck an ‘Aw, shucks’ pose, then looked up at the girls through his hair.
“I think he’s volunteering to be out escort,” Rogue guessed, fighting down a grin.
“You’re kidding.”
“I don’t think he is.” Rogue ambled down the stairs, and Jono hastened to open the door for her.
