Victor Mancha woke up in his room and looked at his ceiling, a puzzled frown on his face. Something didn't seem quite right. Why...

They'd moved. That was it. Mama had moved them across the city, to a better neighborhood. That was why everything was so... new.

He climbed out of the too new bed and padded down the hall, into the kitchen. His mother was making breakfast. "Smells good," he announced.

His mother let out a startled gasp, almost dropping the frying pan. Her eyes raked him up and down as she took several deep breaths, studying him like he was something new and alien. "Victor!" she finally said, breaking into a wide smile. "You startled me."

"Sorry, Mama." He kissed her cheek, and she ruffled his hair.

"Go get dressed. We've got a long day ahead of us."
