“We failed them,” Karolina said quietly, a hand resting on Xavin’s arm as they both watched the Majesdane refugees. “We tried to help them, and we failed.”
Xavin put her hand on top of Karolina’s, her lips pressed together into a thin line. “It wasn’t our fault. We did all we could. We still are.”
“So why do I feel like this is all my fault?” Karolina asked.
“Your name is ill omened.”
Karolina felt Xavin tense under her hand as the Skrull turned to face a young Majesdane male, eyes narrowed. “What?”
“Kahl-ina. ‘Space between stars’,” the boy said. “Ill omened.”
“It’s Kare-o-line-a. Like the state,” Karolina replied, clutching Xavin’s forearm.
The boy sighed softly. “Yes yes. And now you wish to fix things.” He gave them a bored look. “Facinating. But then…” He smiled bitterly. “I thought it was a bad idea from the start. Have fun.” He stuffed his hands into his pockets and walked away.
