Jono was brooding on his couch, refusing to look at Jubilee as she did her damnedest to make him listen.
A few months ago, she would have tosses a few paffs at him. Now all she could do was yell. Which she was doing now. Finally, she ran out of steam. "They just wanted to help you," she said hoarsely.
"I didn't want their help, or their pity, and I'm done with superheroic stupidity," Jono said.
"It could be different this time," she said, standing in front of him with her hands on her hips.
"Why would it be?" Jono retorted. "New people, same events. I'm tired of making friends and watching them die." He pushed a few shaggy brown locks out of his face and scowled.
Jubilee looked at him, her lower lip trembling. She swallowed hard, her face crinkling, and she started to giggle. The giggle turned into an out and out laugh, and she sat down on the couch, doubling over.
"What," Jono asked, "do you find so very funny?"
"You," Jubilee giggled, "have no idea what you look like, do you?"
"Unfortunately," Jono growled back, "I do."
She was still giggling, and looking at his face only made it worse. When she was able to speak again, she said, "I thought your accent would be thicker."
"Eh?" Jono arched an eyebrow.
"Your accent," Jubilee said. "It was like something out of Mary Poppins back in the day. Now you sound... well, different."
He blinked. "It was a joke," he said. "I wanted to see if you Yanks would buy into it. Mr. Cassidy did the same thing. Mine was easier to pull off. All in the mind, y'know?"
Jubilee gave him an open mouthed look and started giggling again. "I cannot believe you!"
"I am so pleased I can keep you amused, Lee."
"Who'd have thought you have a sense of humor?" she teased.
"I'm full of hidden talents." Jono sniffed. Jubilee was giving him an odd look, and there was a decidedly calculating gleam in her eyes. "What?"
Jubilee closed the distance between them, her lips locking on Jono's. Her tongue snaked into his mouth, invading. Jono sat there in shock, his hands clenching on the upholstery. It had been a long time since anyone's tongue had been in his mouth. He found himself responding out of instinct, his tongue entwining with hers. She tasted like the sweet, milky tea he'd served when she'd shown up at his flat.
When they finally broke apart for air, he panted, "What are you doin', gel?"
"I always wanted to know how good a kisser you were," she murmured back with a cheeky grin.
