Sarah watched her father place a small round stone on top of the little metal plate set into the ground. “We should not be here,” she said. “It is entirely too exposed, and you have already been shot once.”
“And the woman who shot me is dead,” William said flatly. “The little girl who shot me…” he said in a softer voice.
Sarah studied the set of her father’s shoulders. “You are having second thoughts?”
“Eli’s little sister is dead because of me, Sarah. I knew her. I liked her.”
“She clearly did not like you,” Sarah said sourly.
William watched his daughter with a sad look on his face. “Maybe if you’d been raised here, you would understand,” he sighed.
“You say that to me often,” Sarah reminded him. “You would say that to Max, too, if he were here.”
“Max is too young for this. Hell, you’re too young for this.”
“And yet here I am and here I will stay. So my duty demands.”
William sighed again, reaching out and pulling his daughter to him in a brief hug. “Honey, you have so many issues, you know that?”
“You say that to me often, too,” the princess noted. “Are you ready to leave yet?”
“Give me a bit longer to say goodbye to your grandparents, then we can go.”
