Rowena marched into the ally behind the dance club, her son trailing behind her. She whirled around as soon as the door shut, looked down her nose at Ajax. “The excuse I am about to hear had better be phenomenally good,” she hissed. The part of her that noticed these things spotted flecks of silver in his thinning black hair. There were new wrinkles, too, made harsher by the lighting in the ally. Her son was getting old, and she was young again. “I’m trying to have fun.”
“We need you, Mom, we-”
“You are adults,” she said. “I’ve done all I can to raise you to be independent. I thought I’d done a decent job of that.” She rested her hands on her hips.
“Mom, this isn’t like you.”
“How would you know?” Rowena asked. “The last time I was this age, I was pregnant with you. Before that, I was raising your uncle and going to school, where I was a social pariah. For the first time in my life, I am actually responsible for no one. I don’t have a care in the world.” She spread her arms, throwing her head back. “So tell me, what on Earth could you say to me to get me to go with you?”
“Cyrus ripped Kara’s throat out.”
