“I don’t want to hear it,” Gunther said sourly as Jean-Luc quietly counted out the money. “Not one word.”
“I didn’t say a word,” Jean-Luc said lightly. “Hand me the jeweler’s glass?”
Gunther looked around him, then rolled the little black tube towards his partner in crime before reaching for a run with a large and gaudy ruby set in to it. “Hideous.”
“It’s not like we’re keeping it, Gunther,” the mortal pointed out. “It can be an ugly ring.”
“Why would anyone want an ugly ring?”
“Why do people buy those Precious Moments figurines?” Jean-Luc asked. “People have no taste. They’ll buy it if they think they need it.”
“Feh.”
“Don’t mock. This will pay for your new temple. Something less inclined towards burning down or blowing up. Maybe even some tasteful marble statues.”
"I'm Asir. We don't do tasteful marble statues."
“What do you do? Besides burn down your own temples and trying to scalp your followers.”
Gunther looked down at the ugly ruby ring, tilting his head as he looked thoughtful. “Oh, you know. Fighting and drinking. Putting dead people in flaming boats. That kind of thing.”
“Uh-huh.”
