Title: Last Day on Earth
Fandom: X-Men/Young Avengers
Characters: Billy/Teddy, one sided Victor/Billy
Prompt: 23. Been given 24 hours to tie up loose ends. – 24, Jem
Word Count: 400
Rating: PG
Summary: Billy’s got a day to get everything in order.
Author's Notes: Sequel to Off.
“Twenty-four hours and counting,” Billy said, checking his watch when Victor asked how long it was until he and Teddy would be leaving for outer space.
“What are you going to do?” Victor asked, putting on a cheerful face, even though he knew Billy couldn’t see it over the phone.
Billy shrugged, even though he was alone. “Say goodbye, spend some time with everyone. Tie up some loose ends. I was hoping to talk you into some breakfast. I’ve got bagels and lox,” he added, “from that deli you really like.”
“Now how could I say no to that? Where do you want to meet?”
The smell of ozone alerted Victor to the fact that Billy was now in his apartment before the other man spoke. “Here, if you don’t have any objections.”
Victor turned off his cell phone and shook his head. “Fine by me as long as you don’t mind me grading papers while I eat.”
“I never have before. Why start now?”
***
They didn’t talk about Teddy, or about Billy leaving for God only knew how long. Instead, they focused on trivialities like Northstar’s new boyfriend (of whom Victor approved, and Billy found mildly obnoxious), and Tommy dying his hair green after losing a bet with Julian. They discussed Eli’s little sister, who had begun training with Kate, and when Mr. Summers would make an honest woman of Ms. Frost (which both Victor and Billy agreed would be impossible, but the wedding would be spectacular). And in the end, they talked about nothing. They just sat silently and tried not to say all the things that they knew that they shouldn’t.
“I’m going to miss you,” Victor sighed, breaking the taboo.
“Me too.”
“It’s almost noon. You should probably get a move on.”
“Yeah.” Billy stood up, not looking at Victor as he did so. “I’ll see you when I come back.”
“Be careful out there.”
“Always.” Billy sort of smiled, and the expression was the last thing to disappear as he teleported away, leaving Victor with the lingering scene of ozone.
