“I want the one who did this found and I want them brought to me,” Ted told the small gathering of Super-Skrulls. “Alive and relatively undamaged, if possible. If not…” He squeezed William’s hand, listening to the beeps of the machines he was hooked up to. There was something universal about those things; they all made the same noise. “I will not let this go unpunished. If you cannot bring the assassin in alive… be sure the make a very visible example of them.”
“As you command.”
They filed out, leaving Ted alone with William and his daughter, who had been lurking, waiting. She opened her mouth, and Ted cut her off with a sharp gesture.
“You’re not going, Sarah.”
“Why not? I am every bit as capable as any of them.” She jerked her head in the direction the Super Skrulls had gone.
“Because I’ve come too close to losing one person I love today, and I won’t risk another. I’m tempted to send you back to the Throneworld to stay with Max.” Ted caressed the knuckles of William’s hand with his thumb.
“I will not be treated like a hatchling.” Sarah hissed.
“I’m doing no such thing.” Ted looked up at his daughter, watching her face morph from the very Skrull like look she wore in public to her true face. “You have a duty to the Empire as my heir to remain safe. That far outweighs any need you may have to avenge your father.”
“You let him fight. Why not me?”
“I never let your father do anything. You know that, Sarah.”
