Kate studied the shattered remains of the table, nudging one leg, the largest piece left, with the toe of her shoe. “You know,” she drawled, looking at Tommy and Jonas through her eyelashes, “I’ve decided that I just don’t want to know how this happened.”
Jonas, at least, had the good grace to look faintly ashamed of himself. Tommy seemed far more interested in the dirt that had collected beneath his fingernails, and he clearly wasn’t the least bit sorry for the mess he had caused. [I’ll get a new one,] Jonas said.
“Thank you, Jonas,” Kate said graciously. She looked at Tommy, sniffed, and left the room.
“Sooo…” Tommy drawled, “on a scale between one and ten…”
[Fifty.]
“That bad?”
[That bad.]
