Notes: Another tale from the Saga of Billy Wagner
It took nearly three months for Teddy Altman to get to know Billy Wagner well enough to know that he wore a Saint Christopher medal on a chain around his neck, though during time when he was feeling really stressed, he’d wrap the chain around his wrist and finger the medal. It took a lot of effort to learn these little things; Billy lived in Westchester and even when he was in New York, which was frequent, he didn’t go out of his way to advertise his presence. He wasn’t the social butterfly his father and brother were. And usually, when they ran into each other, they were busy fighting the Mole Man or Mr. Hyde.
But bit by bit, Teddy managed to get closer to Billy. Billy liked Brit-coms and sci-fi, and he swore in German when he was angry. He crouched and perched rather than sat, often hanging upside down if there was something he could wrap his tail around. Teddy found this endearing.
Billy would let his brother go on and on, all the while making fun of the speedster under his breath and behind his back. He tended to be deadpan in his humor, and would throw out obscure quotes at the drop of a hat. He would smile sweetly when anyone got<.I> those references. Teddy usually got the references, and began boning up, just so he would get those smiles more often.
It took him another month to work up the courage to ask Billy out, and even then it wasn’t a real date. It was burgers. Friends went out of burgers. Teddy had gone for burgers with Greg and the team all the time.
Billy was a bit less oblivious than Greg had been.
“Is this a date?”
Teddy’s eyes dropped to the table and locked on the Saint Christopher medal between Billy’s fingers.
“It… could be,” Teddy said slowly.
Billy smiled, just for a moment, before ducking his head.
