Summary: In which Jono is less than pleased over his recent mental encounters with Nate.

On stage, a woman at a piano was singing about an ex-boyfriend and his Jeep while Nate sat in the smokey bar, not really listening. His mind was blocks away (but getting closer), with an agitated young telepath. He’d been following the mutant for hours and miles, all the way from Snow Valley. The other boy’s mind boiled with so many conflicting thought and emotions, threatening to explode at any moment.
Nate hoped he wouldn’t be treated to an explosion of the literal type, but it had happened with Jono before.
STAY OUT OF MY BLOODY HEAD!
Nate flinched, drawing back into his body. He waited, fiddling with his drink as Jono drew nearer.
Jono’s entrance to the pub was surprisingly quiet. If Nate hadn’t been watching for Jono, he might not have even noticed. Briefly, he reached out to the other man with his mind, and encountered a boiling wall of… not rage. More like intense irritation. Jono marched up to Nate’s table and glowered, flames licking up from beneath the bandages that swathed the place that had once been his face, threatening to leap out and devour everything.
I don’t know what kind of games you’re playing, squire, Jono growled in his mind, but it stops now.
Nate ran a finger around the rim of his glass, mulling over his reply. “You’re the one who reached out to me,” he finally said, watching Jono through his eyelashes.
That was not what I meant to have happen, and you know it!
Nate blinked. “I wish I knew what you’re getting so bent out of shape about. We enjoyed ourselves. Big deal.”
It is to me.
