Looking across the room, into the mad red eyes of Apocalypse, I know I am about to take my last breaths. One way or another, it was all about to end for one of us. Honestly, I never thought it would come to this. Sure, I’d heard stories about Apocalypse; first from my great-grandfather, then from the X-Men, but I’d never thought I’d be facing him. I never thought I’d stand before him, champion of his abandoned children.

But I’m not there for them.

I’m here because it is the right thing to do.

I take my last breath, holding it in as I let the fire inside me burn. It doesn’t hurt -- it never does, not once it really got rolling. For a moment, the mad god of my ancestors looks surprised.

I savor that look as my body burns away, taking him with it.

(in full discalmer, I first saw Jono in New Warriors III IV and then realized it was him in the old Gen. X comics, so I don't know his backstory. However...) This is great, not knowing Jono's beginings. Now I have to get my hands on his intro issues so I can re-read this and get the full level of awesomeness, in an angsty-but-hopeful sort of way. ^_^

Well, the whole Decended From Apocalypse thing is a relatively recent ret-con that first showed up in Apocalypse vs Dracula (which you should read), and was carried over into Jono's sole appearance in Excalibur, and was, much to my disappointment, not really followed up with in New Warriors, aside from keeping him having a face. Before that, his origin never really went further back than his chest exploding, crippling his then girlfriend.

Nope, much as some might wish it was. Unless we're thinking of different incarnations of the book.
