The front porch creaked ominously under Santo’s weight. Victor waved his mom off and shut the door, leaving himself out in the cold with his ex. “Don’t you have some place to be?” He pulled his hands into the sleeves of his sweater to keep from crossing his arms and glared at Santo, angry at having to come out in the cold to talk to someone he did not want to see. There was a little box in Santo’s large, rocky hands, and Santo was looking as much like a kicked puppy as an eight foot tall stone golem could.

“I ain’t here to apologize,” Santo said, holding out the present. “I was just passing through on my way to Boston to see my family.”

Victor looked at the gift. “I wouldn’t accept an apology from you anyway.”

He hadn’t in the last two months, since they’d broken up for what Victor had promised was the absolute last time. Nobody had believed them when they’d both said they were broken up; they’d been going on and off rapidly the entire time they were dating. Even Santo seemed surprised that they’d stayed broken up. Until Santo’s supreme act of jack-assery, it’d only take a few days before Victor would forgive him.

Still, Victor knew that his words on that snowy night were harsh, but he didn’t really care. Santo deserved every bit of scorn Victor could muster up.

“Then we’re agreeing about something. Cool.” Santo’s hand remained extended. A moment stretched out between them before Victor finally took the gift. “Are we cool, Vic?”

“… yeah, I guess,” Victor conceded.

“I wasn’t about to let you run off and get killed,” Santo said, his voice low. Before Victor could retort, the door opened behind him, letting a wave of warm air wash over him.

“Everything alright out here?” his mother asked.

“Yeah, we’re fine.”

“Would your friend like to come in? The cookies just finished, and your father finally found that version of the Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart.”

Victor glanced at Santo, who hesitated. “Love to, but I gotta hit the road. I need to be in Boston by Christmas Eve, cause Mama would kill me if I didn’t get there in time for mass.”
