Summary: There are times when Abe doesn’t get his sister’s sense of humor.
Authors Notes/Disclaimer: Mine!
Abraham Maharissa looked first at the words painted on the plate glass window, then at his sister. She was sporting one of her all too rare smiles as she leaned against the glass. He looked at the words again, shaking his head. “The Devil’s Due?” he finally said, barely able to choke out the words. The smile disappeared from her face, morphing in to a pout.
“I was going to call it ‘Needful Things’, but that seemed a little on the nose,” she said, pushing off from the window and turning to look at the building. Aside from the shiny new store from, it looked just like every other poorly kept brick building on the block, with crumbling brickwork, a rusty fire escape, and bars on the windows.
“Is this really the best place for a shop, Sissy?” Abe asked, nostrils flared as he took in all the smells of the inner city. “Uch. There’s a dead man in the ally. Smells like he’s been there a few days.”
Rowena pulled her braid over her shoulder, smoothing a few escaped strands of black hair back down. “I’m not exactly spoiled for choice, puppy. I’m here to stand guard first and foremost.”
Abe’s frown deepened. “What about the pack?” He shifted his weight restlessly, eying a group of teenagers slouching their way down the street. He curled his lip up in a snarl, pearly white teeth looking extra sharp against his dusky skin. The boys crossed the street and continued on their way.
“I thought I was supposed to be the vicious one.” Rowena reached over, tucking her arm through her little brother’s and pulling him along. “I’m not leaving the pack completely to their own devices. I’ll still be at the farm. I’ll just be here more.” She plucked a silver hair from her braid. “My children are grown. I’m not needed there. But here…”
“We still need you. We’ll always need you.”
Rowena planted a kiss on her brother’s forehead. “And when you need me, you’ll know where to find me. I’ve got a tentacle monster in the basement to watch over.”
“You could have said no,” Abe sighed, cupping her face in his hands. “You didn’t owe that son of a bitch anything.”
“Doctor Karis was my teacher. You know how much that means. He took me when no one else would. It’s my duty to take on his legacy. Anyway, it gives me something to do. You know how much I loathe feeling useless.”
“You were never useless. You couldn’t be useless if you tried.”
“And I don’t plan to ever be.”
