“I could chuck a fork right through him,” Becca suggested, watching the jocks across the cafeteria with dark intent. If any of them had been aware of what the petite brunette was capable of, they might not have been laughing like they were. Dexter pushed peas around his lunch tray, his glasses almost at the tip of his nose as lank blond hair obscured his face.
“But then your dad will make his unhappy face,” he reminded the older girl, green eyes peering at her through thick lashes. One eyelid was purple and swollen.
“If they knew who you were, they wouldn’t dream of doing any of the shit they pull on you.” Becca said sourly. She had long ago decided that if the popular kids didn’t like her just as she was, she wanted nothing to do with them. Her status as the daughter of two publicly known super heroes and the sister of the ever popular Bobby granted her protection that Dexter didn’t share in. It was just as well for them, since Becca would have had no problems with fighting back. “I could break their arms for you.”
Dexter smiled, just a little bit. “Your dad still wouldn’t approve.”
“But Pop would buy me ice cream,” she countered. “He appreciates my sense of justice.” Her eyes were following Bobby, who was trailed by his entourage as he crossed the cafeteria and sat down right next to the gaggle of jocks. They welcomed him, and Bobby basked in the attention. “Hmph.”
“Just because he wants to fit in,” Dexter sighed, “is no reason for you to glare at him like that.”
“I think it’s perfectly reasonable. And I hope he gets the funny syphilis.” She stabbed at her peas.
“How about he gives them the funny syphilis?” Dexter suggested brightly. “I could live with that.”
