Cessily carefully lifted the dress out of the box, holding it up against her body as she turned towards the mirror hanging up on the back of her door. “Oh my God.”
It was beautiful. The bodice was forest green, and flowed into a fully black skirt that reached her ankles. The sleeves had ribbons running from should to wrist in the same color as the bodice, leaving just a hint of bare flesh there when the dress was on. It looked fantastic. Every bit as good as when she’d tried it on during her last trip to the city with the others. She’d known she’d never be able to afford it, even before she’d tried it on, but it was nice to dream.
“Cess, you in?” Julian called, knocking on the door. He opened it and grinned. “Oh good, it got here.”
“You bought this?” Cessily asked, nearly dropping the dress.
“It looked good on you,” he said. “Black really is your color, and you need a new nice dress.”
“You didn’t have to do this,” she said, looking down at the dress.
“I wanted to,” Julian insisted. “Wear it tonight. We’re celebrating my birthday.”
