Title: Tear My Heart Open part 4: Everything Burns
Fandom: X-Men
Characters: Jonothon Starsmore, Monet St. Croix
Prompt: 8. Everything Burns
Word Count: 400~
Rating: PG
Summary: Burn it all down, while my anger reigns... till everything burns.
He should have known better. These things always ended badly. From Gayle to Paige to Amber. He didn’t know what made him think things would be different with Monet.
Maybe it was the tiny part of him buried deep in his soul, that was a hopeless romantic. The part that enjoyed it when Monet took his hand, and that made his heart beat faster when she smiled at him.
Sodding bastard.
He tried to keep telling himself he was just in it for Penny, and for the stuff, but he knew he was lying to himself.
They never did get around to moving Penny out, and if felt more and more like Monet was moving in.
Though she made frequent trips elsewhere, she was spending more and more time in London . With him.
Mostly, they talked.
About the old days, about the new days, about what people they knew where up to.
Sometimes they talked about being trapped in nightmarishly twisted bodies, with no escape.
Many times, they were simply silent.
It was a good thing.
And like all good things in his life, it came to an end in fire.
They’d picked the table farthest from the door, in an out of the way corner. The idea was so that they wouldn’t be bothered.
The folks who called themselves the Reals had other plans.
It wasn’t Monet or Jono that attracted them. The pub had been a popular mutant hangout in London ’s equivalent of Mutant Town until M-Day. It was still popular amongst the former mutants. When you lost something, you clung to the familiar. And since there wouldn’t be anyone with powers there, since everyone knew all the mutants were at Xavier’s now, it was the perfect target.
Not the brightest of lads, some would argue. Asking for trouble.
Which they got in spades when one of them tried to grab Monet.
Maybe if there were fewer of them, or if there weren’t so many civilians around, things would have turned out differently.
Maybe.
Monet knew it was coming only seconds before it happened. She could hear Jono screaming in her head as everything exploded.
The last sight she had of Jono was the all too familiar inferno bursting from his chest.
He was gone when she woke up amidst the scorched rubble.
