Jono closed his eyes and pressed his fingers to his temples, rubbing in small circles that did no good. Gayle sat beside him, her knuckles white as she clenched her hands on the handles of her wheelchair.

I'm sorry, he said for what must have been the millionth time.

"Sorry doesn't change anything Jonothon."

I know. Jono looked up at the grey sky. But I don't know how to fix it.

"It's not fair."

I know.

"I want to go back."

Me too.

"I miss dancing the night away."

I miss drinking a pint.

"I miss stubbing my toe."

I miss your cooking.

Gayle smacked him upside the head. He didn't even try to dodge. "I miss you. I miss us."

I miss you too, gel. But we can't do this.

"I know."
