Rowena looked up at the blood red moon that dominated the dark, starless sky. “Isn’t it magnificent?” Daniel breathed. Rowena’s eyes turned to her companion, studying him. The pudgy young man licked his lips, turning an excited look on the currently youthful immortal. “Imagine! Eternal night! No more daylight dwelling humans-”
“Last I noticed, you were a human,” Rowena said dryly, but he paid her no heed.
“We can be gods, Rowena! You and-” He turned earnest, hopeful eyes on her, licking his lips again. “You and me. All would bow before us.”
Rowena looked back up at the unnatural moon again. “And when the people rebel, when they starve, when there is nothing left but the bones and us, then what?”
Daniel never saw the knife in her hand, even as she brought it up and slashed his throat open. As his blood drained away, the moon grew pale and shrank, and the stars winked back in to life.
