Victor landed on his back with enough forced to knock the air out of his lings as the shrapnel whizzed by where his head and chest had been. He closed his eyes and inhaled, coughing as the smoke tried to fill his lungs. “You,” he managed to gasp as he rolled to his feet, “could not have planned for all of this.”
Amadeus looked decidedly unruffled as he patted out a few embers that had landed on his jacket. “Did too,” he insisted. “I’m hungry,” he added. “Where’s a good place to get something to eat around here?”
“Nobody could have calculated all the variables,” Victor insisted right back.
“I’m really smart,” Amadeus explained. “Trust me.”
