Nezhno was making his daily visit to Doctor McCoy when he found Megan in the infirmary. She looked at him, and all the color drained from her face as she fixed her eyes on the floor.
For once, he was the first to speak. “Is it true?”
Megan sniffled, and Nezhno bit the inside of his lower lip as he felt panic rising inside him. “I cannot do this,” he said. “I cannot… I’m not…” He hand a hand over his face. “I do not even know if I am going to be alive in a year.”
Megan squirmed, making a miserable noise.
“Please tell me you are not going to start crying again,” Nezhno said desperately.
“I’m not,” she whispered hoarsely. She sniffled again.
“What are you going to do?” he asked.
“I don’t know. My parents are going to freak.” Megan watched him through her eyelashes. “Are you gonna tell yours?” she asked.
“My mother disowned me,” Nezhno replied, refusing to look at Megan, “and I have never met my father.”
“Oh.”
After a long pause, Nezhno said, “I am sorry,” and made a hasty exit.
