Ted watched William, who sat on the bed, his legs folded beneath him and his eyes closed. He was glowing faintly, and the chamber smelled faintly of ozone. The emperor stayed like that for a while, enjoying this far too rare peaceful moment. Then William inhaled deeply, opening his eyes. He saw Ted and smiled, and for a moment, they were just Billy and Teddy. There was no empire, no war, no dead friends, or friends who had become enemies.
Then the darkness crept back into William’s eyes, and he rose from the bed. “What’s the news from the front?” he asked.
Ted closed in on William, cupping his cheek with one hand. “It can wait a little while,” he said. “Can’t it?”
William sighed, tilting is head slightly to lean into Ted’s hand. “I suppose,” he conceded.
