“You could get rid of it,” Laura said, breaking through Megan’s brooding.

The pink haired girl looked up sharply, wrapping her arms around her middle protectively and staring at Laura as if she had grown a second head. “What?”

Laura studied Megan, eyes sweeping from her disheveled hair to her face, which was puffy and blotchy from crying, down to the still slight bulge of her stomach. “You are miserable because of this,” she said logically. “So you remove the cause.”

“But… it’s a baby!” Megan protested.

“It cannot survive on its own yet. It’s just a collection of cells.”

Megan looked at Laura with undisguised horror. “You can’t be serious. This is a baby, it’s… like, the future! It’s… it’s my baby!”

“Then stop complaining. I’m tired of hearing it.”

Emma had finally succeeded in convincing Scott that he was not the person to be dealing with any of the newly pregnant women. He was the one who seemed to be happiest about the situation; a small baby boom of potential new mutants. New hope for the mutant race.

The question was what to do with the children when they were born. While some of the new mothers to be would be reasonably good parents, there were some who Emma wouldn’t have trusted with a cat, let alone the future of the species. Emma had taken to quietly taking aside those women she had deemed least suitable, trying to convince them that it would be in everyone’s best interests to turn their children over to the care of others. Some had seemed very agreeable, but then there were… well…

“It’s. My. Baby!”

Nezhno was sitting outside in the sunshine when Megan found him. “I’m keeping my baby,” she said, as if she expected an argument.

“Will you love this child?” Nezhno asked.

“Huh?”

“Are you having this child because it is expected of you,” he said slowly, “or because you want and love the child?”

“Why wouldn’t I love my baby?” Megan demanded. “Everyone keeps acting like I can’t handle this, but I can, and I’m gonna love him or her so much, and I’m gonna take care of it, and anyone who doesn’t like it can go suck eggs!”

Nezhno’s expression turned into something that was almost a smile. “Good answer.”

“What about you?” she asked.

“I will save all judgments until we see if I am alive when the child is born,” he answered honestly.
