Princess Anelle looked upon the pink face of her hatchling and gently caressed the soft golden hair on his head. He stirred slightly, but only seemed to fall deeper into sleep.
Had he looked like a Skrull, perhaps she could have found a way to keep young Dorrek, but the boy had been hatched looking like her people’s greatest enemy. Proof of her… indiscretions. She should consider herself lucky that her father had not ordered her death as well.
She cast a glance at the nursemaid, who was practicing her human form in front of a mirror. “Lighter hair,” Anelle suggested. “You need to look as much like him as possible. No one must ever doubt that you are his mother.”
“As you say, my lady.”
Anelle shifted her hatchling in her arms, marveling at how small he felt. This, she knew with absolute certainty, would be the last time she would ever see the boy. “Your destiny is far from here,” she whispered, trying to memorize everything about him.
