Ted looked at the view screen that took up the majority of the bridge’s bulkhead, taking in the details of the blue and green planet. He felt William’s hand clench into a fist beneath his own.
“Home, sweet home,” he heard his husband mutter bitterly.
Neither of them had seen Earth in over twenty years. Not since they’d been forced to flee after William’s family had been killed.
“Be it ever so humble,” Ted whispered back before turning to the general hovering nearby and giving the order to begin the invasion.
“We’re doing the right thing,” William said, not for the first time. He sounded as though he was trying to convince himself as he was Ted. “We’re taking our home back, and we’re going to make it safe.”
Ted closed his eyes, feeling the weight of the crown on his head. “If there’s anything left to take back when we’re done.” He looked at William, feeling very tired. “You know how this is going to look to them.”
William reached over, caressing Ted’s cheek with the lightest of touches. “If it gets them to stop fighting each other again, then I’ll be glad to play the villain.” He smiled slightly, and even after all these years, Ted felt his heart flutter. “Runs in the family, after all.”
