Dorrek looked at the ruins of the Avengers Mansion and felt a shudder of horror run through him. This was his fault. His coming here had caused this to happen. He had found something genuinely good, and his very presence had destroyed it.
It was just like his grandfather had always said.
Billy put a hand on Dorrek’s shoulder, and the prince pulled away, shaking his head.
“This isn’t your fault.”
“They came here for me,” Dorrek growled, rounding on the human. “That is, I believe, the very definition of fault. I was here, and they came, and they will come again until I am either captured or dead.”
Billy’s battered, dirt smudged face hardened. “I’m not going to let that happen, Dorrek.”
“You do not have a say. He has armies, and you are one person,” Dorrek said, feeling his exasperation with his lover grow.
“One person with a lot of powerful friends and family,” Billy corrected, turning to look at his uncle, who was speaking almost entirely too fast to be understood to his ex-wife.
