Victor leaned heavily on the door, shutting his eyes and sighing. He could feel the door shudder beneath the heavy knocks coming from the other side. “It’s the middle of the night,” he called. “This had better be good.” He flung the door open to find William on the other side. “Where’s your security detail?” Victor asked immediately.
William grinned. “Guarding my room. Relax, I can take care of myself. I just… I needed to talk to you without other people around.” He moved past Victor, his head swiveling around as he looked around the room as if he had never seen it before. “Besides, I’m perfectly safe with you, right?”
“Right.” Victor nudged the door shut, watching his prince. “What can I do for you?”
William bit his lower lip, worrying it between his teeth. “What do I mean to you, Victor?”
Victor gaped at William, then groaned softly, leaning against the closed door for support. He turned his head, looking at his uniform, hanging up on a hook on the wall. “Your Highness, it’s the middle of the night…”
“Please, I need to know.” Suddenly, William seemed to fill up his personal space, one cool hand resting on Victor’s cheek, turning his head to look at him. “Victor…”
William froze as Victor pressed a plasma pistol against his ribs. “I don’t know who you are, and I don’t care. All that matters is I’m two seconds away from blowing a hole in you that not even a Skrull can recover from.”
‘William’ backed away, his features shifting, reforming into those of the Emperor. Victor continued to hold the pistol steady on him. “How did you know?” Dorrek asked.
“Because William never would,” Victor said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
