Nezhno stirred the ashes with his hand, letting them fall from his fingers as he stood up. Megan was pulling a small spinal column, still mostly intact, from the rubble of a collapsed building. Once, this had been the shining capital city of Wakanda. Now, it was a burned out wreck, a looming tombstone marking a once great nation’s demise under the hands of alien invaders. Megan tucked the charred spine away, turning to look at Nezhno. Her expression asked the questions she couldn’t seem to voice.
“I am alright,” he assured the woman quietly. “These have not been my people for a very long time.”
“So you keep saying,” she murmured, setting off for the temple complex. The main temple was the only building left standing, and when she looked up, Nezhno was shaking her head.
“There is nothing for either of us there,” he said. “We have what we came for.”
Megan turned back, putting a small hand on top of Nezhno’s. He wrapped his fingers around hers, running this thumb over her knuckles. They stood in the ashes of Wakanda, until Victorious arrived. For a moment, regret flashed over the android’s features. “You got it?” he asked.
Megan produced a small charm, a piece of dark stone carved to look like a man, letting it dangle between her fingers from the leather thong tied around the figure’s neck. “With this, the defenses of the Westchester compound will be little more than paper.”
Victorious’s eyes swept over the ruins of the city. “No problems,” he said hollowly.
“One gets the feeling you’re getting twinges of remorse,” Megan purred, swinging the charm back and forth. Victorious continued to study the blasted landscape, saying nothing.
