Fai licked the blood from his lips, his eye lingering on Kurogane’s face before looking away. “Do you think there’s any hope?” he asked.

Kurogane grunted. “Don’t know. Don’t really care.”

“I don’t remember what having hope is like,” Fai noted. “It died a long time ago.”

“How long were you there?” Kurogane asked. It was the first time he’d actually made mention of what he had seen of Fai’s past.

Fai looked at Kurogane, lips slightly parted. He licked his lips slowly, then said, “I wish I knew.”
