Radu dropped his gaze from the admissions officer’s face, trying to come up with something -- anything -- he could say to the human.

“Why do you want to join the Starcademy?”

Radu didn’t have an answer to that. Not a real one, anyway. He knew, if he did this, there would be no going back. The humans may have freed his people from the Spung, but that didn’t mean they wanted anything to do with the humans. And Radu didn’t dare think that the humans would accept him unconditionally. There was too much blood between his people and them.

So why would he give up being with his people to go amongst aliens who would hate him?

Because someone had to go first. Someone had to try. Because he was unhappy on Andromida, and he wanted something different from what everyone else wanted.

And he had no idea how to explain that without sounding like a total idiot.
