“I don’t like this,” Tommy whispered, adjusting the tie he’d borrowed from Billy. The suit he was wearing was also Billy’s, and for once Billy wasn’t bitching about him taking his stuff. Kate reached over and squeezed his hand.
“Relax,” she said. “Mallory Book’s the best there is. If she can’t get you off…” Kate shrugged. Tommy was vibrating a little in his seat.
“Ishouldrun,” he said, almost too fast for Kate to understand. “Ishould justgonow, beforetheycantakemeawayagain.” He shuddered, looking at Kate with desperation. “I won’t go back.”
“You won’t have to,” Mallory Book said, her tone crisp and firm. “With that clean cut All American Boy look and my expertise, I’ll have the judge eating out of my hand.” She pause. “Just keep your mouth shut and let me do the talking. At most, you’ll be stuck under the aegis of Captain Rogers, but you’re already there anyway, so you’ll do it with a smile on your face if you know what’s good for you,” she added with a hint of a growl.
“You scare me,” Tommy said.
“I’m a lawyer, kid. Scaring people is my job. Stop playing with your tie.” Mallory produced a comb, seemingly out of nowhere. “And comb your hair. ’Everyboy’ is good. Scruffy is not.”
Tommy blinked at the comb, then quickly ran it through his hair before Mallory could start on him again.
“Teach me to do that,” Kate said, sounding impressed.
