When Noriko had first seen the device David had built, she’d thought it looked like something out of a bad shonen manga, and she’d told him as much. He’d just looked at her coolly and told her to get on the damn treadmill so they could get back to their own time.
The problem, they both soon realized, was that not even David’s borrowed brilliance could make up for the fact that Noriko had only so much endurance.
“I can’t!”
“You have to!” David shouted back. “If you stop now, you’ll kill us both!”
Noriko could feel her legs getting weaker with ever step, and the sparks were coming more and more erratic. “Can’t!” she repeated, unable to even summon up the breath to say more. It took everything she had just to say it in English, forgetting that thanks to the Cuckoos, he probably understood Japanese perfectly.
“You can’t stop now! Nori, you can do this, you have to!”
Her legs felt like lead, and it took all that she could summon up to keep putting one foot in front of the other. If she proved David right, she was going to break this thing over his damn head.
