Noriko’s grandfather had often talked to her about how important maintaining the family honor was when she was little, especially before her brother was born. She had to conform. She had to fit in the place assigned to her by her family, her school, and her country.
She would bring honor to her family by being an obedient daughter, doing well in school, marrying an appropriate man, and having sons to carry on the family honor.
Noriko rarely listened to her grandfather’s long winded lectures.
