Kate Bishop looked from the scene in front of her, then up at her mother. “It’s not fair,” she said, her voice whisper soft. “It’s not fair,” she repeated, louder, eyebrows drawing together in a thunderous dark line. Her mother’s hand felt heavy as it rested on the top of her head, fingers twisting gently through her hair.
“Life isn’t fair, darling,” she said tenderly.
Kate turned this piece of information over in her head, digesting it. “But why not?” she demanded.
“Can you imagine what life would be like if it was fair? If we deserved everything bad that happened to us?” She sighed the sigh of a woman who knew what she had said had just gone over her daughter’s head. “We just have to do everything we can to make things a little more fair.”
Kate nodded grimly, lips set in a determined line.
