Paige was still practically floating when she got home, and was so distracted that she was nearly knocked over by the flood of siblings that boiled off the porch to greet her.
“Paige, Joshua’s being an ass!”
“Don’t call your brother an ass, Melody,” Paige said automatically, her hand slipping into her pocket to touch the piece of paper with a little heart burned into it. “Where’s Mama?”
“She was sleepn’, but then the twins started kickin’ up a fuss, and Joshua was an ass-”
“Kitchen,” Paige sighed, wading her way through the tide of siblings to go to her mother’s side.
