Jono knew, even as he turned in the direction of the trucks fast approaching the farm, that he was probably going to die there. “Mrs. Guthrie? It’s time to go.”

Lucinda Guthrie climbed up into the beat up old truck, casting a look over her children packed into the cab and the truck bed as she did so, then looked to Jono. “Get in.”

Jono’s eyes were locked on the newer, nicer trucks speeding towards them. He knew that men from the Church of Humanity would be inside them, looking for blood. As it was, they were already doing their very best impression of angry villagers from a monster movie. “They’re looking for something to fight. A monster.” He smiled thinly, fingering the collar around his neck. It hummed softly. “I’m going to give them a monster. I’ll catch up,” he lied. The look Lucinda gave him made it clear she didn’t believe Jono any more than he believed himself.

He hadn’t meant to come there in the first place. He’d just kind of ended up in Cumberland after a bit of a bender. Lucinda had found him and, much to his surprise, brought him home. She was… nice.

And now Jono was getting ready to buy her time to get herself and her kids away, far enough that they could get ahold of the X-Men. Because she was nice and he liked her, and the kids, and… maybe he felt like he owed Paige something.

“Be careful, kiddo,” Lucinda said, reaching over and touching his hair in an affectionate, motherly gesture. His own mother had never been one for those kinds of things, but Jono knew one when he saw one. “We’ll see you there.”

“Yeah,” he lied again.
