Mary Jane opened the curtain that covered her window, searching for the source of the irritating tapping sound. She let out a startled yelp when she found herself confronted with a dark red mask, too-large white eyes, and a mass of brown hair. “Ohmygod!”

“Uh, hi, MJ.” The girl in red spandex wiggled her fingers in a little wave. “Can I come in?”

Mary Jane blinked, her glasses sliding down her nose until they nearly fell off.

“Please?”

Mary Jane pushed her window open, letting the Spider Woman crawl in. Mary Jane backed off as the other girl shut the window behind her. “I’m really sorry to just show up like this, but-”

That was when Mary Jane noticed the gashes in the costume, running from her hip and up her back to her shoulder blades. The skin hadn’t been broken, but there were harsh looking red welts where it was exposed. “Oh. Um.”

Spider Woman pulled down her mask, revealing an entirely too familiar face giving her big, sad puppy dog eyes. “Uh, yeah. If I could borrow,” she tugged at the torn edges, “a needle? And some thread? I can get outta here.” She jerked her thumb towards the window.

“How’d this happen?” Mary Jane asked.

Spider Woman pushed some stray hair behind her ear. “Mutant sewer rats. Seriously.”

“Oh God, what a mess,” Mary Jane muttered. That was when the smell actually hit her, almost enough to literally knock her off her feet. “Whoof!”

“I hosed off before I came here,” Spider Woman said defensively.

“Gimme that. You can use my shower, it’s right-”

“I remember,” Spider Woman said quietly, those big brown eyes locked on the floor. The room just filled with awkward silence. “Y’know, I came here instead of-” She gestured vaguely towards Peter’s house, “ ‘cause… well, actually, no one’s home. But also I thought this might be less weird.”

“Weird doesn’t even begin,” Mary Jane said.

“Can I still shower?”

***

“Jessica.”

Mary Jane looked up, pushing a needle in to the girl’s costume, pins clenched between her teeth. “Mm?”

“My name. I figure any girl who lets me borrow her clothes gets to call me Jessica.” Spider Woman was wearing one of Mary Jane’s nightgowns. She smiled, and Mary Jane’s guts knotted up. It was almost like talking to Peter, the way things used to be. Mary Jane looked away, and Jessica swore quietly. “I’m sorry, MJ.”

Mary Jane tied off the thread. “My life is so weird.”

Tell me about it,” Jessica muttered, hugging her knees to her chest, her chin resting on top of her knees and her face mostly hidden by the curtain of her hair. After a moment, she pushed it out of her face with an irritated noise.

“Rubber bands?” Mary Jane suggested. “You’d look cute in braids,” she added. Jessica turned one of Peter’s better woebegone looks on her.

“Is this gonna turn in to one of those movies with slumber parties and make overs and pillow fights in our underwear?” Jessica asked. “Cause if it is, I’m gonna need a different nighty.”

Mary Jane started to giggle, carefully taking the pins out of her mouth before she accidentally swallowed them.

In the end, they braided Jessica’s hair and pinned it to the top of her head. No make up was involved, but some bad movies did get found -- and they talked. It was like old times, it really was. Mary Jane had missed being able to talk to someone like she was talking to Jessica. Jessica’s arm was draped across Mary Jane’s waist, and they were both laying on Mary Jane’s bed, dissecting the movie in front of them.

“Oh, come on! Just punt the puppet!”

“Oh owie! Why does that one always go for the ankles?”

“Well, in the first one he got that one girl in the jaw…”

“And here comes the obligatory boob shot.”

“So the puppets are good guys now?”

“Yeah, but they get more ambiguous after the fifth movie. Not counting that thing with Feldman.” Jessica fingered her uniform as the credits started to roll. “I should get going.”

“Pressing crime fighting waiting?” Mary Jane asked.

“Something like that,” Jessica said uncomfortably.

“You could, I dunno, stay tonight? I don’t think Mom would even notice,” Mary Jane added. Jessica’s eyebrows arched, and Mary Jane rolled her eyes. “You’re the one who’s been telling me you’re not Peter. Well, part of being Not Peter is that Mom isn’t gonna worry about a girl in my room on a Saturday night.”

“Point,” Jessica conceded. “You’re sure it’s not too weird?”

Mary Jane grinned, ducking her head to hide the blush that threatened to creep up her neck and on to her face. “I think I’m getting used to weird.”
