“He needs help,” Rebecca said softly, squeezing Jeff’s hand as Captain America lead Billy out. Jeff closed his eyes, inhaling deeply through his nose.
“I don’t like it,” he said.
“Honey-”
Jeff stood up. “I don’t care of you think that Billy’s had a psychotic break or something. The last time an Avenger took our boy, he ended up in the Negative Zone. And we just let him walk out the door with our boy.”
Rebecca stood up, leaning across the table and cupping her husband’s face in her hands. “What choice did we have? This is so far beyond our realm of experience, and they just want to help him.”
“I know,” he said with a gusty sigh. “God, Rebecca, what’s happening? Why us?” He ran his hands lightly down Rebecca’s arms, then pushed his glasses back up his nose. Rebecca rested her forehead against Jeff’s. “He’s never going to trust us again after this.”
“Of course he will. And he gets that dramatic streak of his from you, obviously.”
