“Sissy-” Abe swung up to a higher branch and looked down at his sister. Rowena looked up, hands on her hips and her lops thinned. “Come on!”
“Absolutely not,” she said, tossing her glossy black braid over her shoulder. “Get down from there.”
“I like it up here,” Abe called back, hanging upside down from a branch. “You love to climb.”
She shook her head. “I used to,” she corrected. “Then I fell to my death.”
Abe’s good cheer evaporated as he hung there, watching his older sister. He wasn’t about to forget what had happened; there were nights where the memory woke him up screaming. The sight of his sister impaled on the broken pipe was seared into his mind. The fact that she’d gotten back up didn’t change anything. Silently, Abe climbed back down, wrapping his arms around Rowena. His sister was tall for a girl, but despite the six year age gap between them, Abe was catching up to her in height. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the scent of soap and young woman and spell stuff. She was the only solid thing in her life, as much mother to him as sister.
“It’s alright,” Rowena murmured, sliding a hand over his hair in a comforting gesture. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Abe clung tighter, shuddering.
