Benjamin Parker was surprised to find a speedster in his room. Ray-Ray Shepard looked at him like she was looking through him. He rubbed his face with his hands, sitting down. “I… I’m sick of apologizing,” he said. “I keep saying that I’m sorry, and it makes no difference.”
“Are you really sorry?” she asked, almost desperately. Ray-Ray looked miserable, like she had every time he’d seen her since… the whole thing with Zeke and Bobby and the Tower almost being destroyed. Her hair was reaching that point where it was long enough to fall in her eyes and be irritating, and he could see the silvery roots of the streaks in her hair. She leaned forward, hands clasped together between her knees, a hopeful look on her face.
“Ray… Rachel. You… what is it?”
“Becca wants you back.”
Benji blinked. “She what?”
Ray-Ray unclasped her fingers, then twined them together again. “The end of the world has come. Becca has forgiven you. She still wants Zeke’s balls, but she’s forgiven you… as much as she ever forgives anyone.”
“What about you?” Benji asked. “Have you forgiven me?”
Ray-Ray examined a blue dyed streak of hair, wrapping it around one finger. “I don’t know yet. Maybe a little.”
