There was a hand squeezing Kevin’s shoulder, much to his surprise. He looked at the golden fingers out of the corner of his eyes, feeling a scowl come to his face.

“You did the right thing, Kevin.”

“Because it’s what you would have done?” Kevin asked. The bitterness in his voice should have been enough to cause death and serious bodily harm.

“Not that long ago,” Josh said, “I gave a man a brain tumor. Inoperable. He’s going to die slowly and painfully. I gave Stryker the fucking plague, practically melted him from the inside out. You did what I wouldn’t have done, just then.” Josh squeezed Kevin’s shoulder again before sliding his fingers up to caress the other boy’s cheek. “You’re a good man, whether you believe it or not.”
