“They weren’t really my friends,” Johnny admitted to Peter one day, after telling him of the adventures of the Future Mad Scientists of America (his name for the Baxter Building’s old student body, which Peter had found hilarious, but Sue and his dad had always hated). “They put up with me, but I never really fit in. My brains weren’t big enough.”

“I think you’re smart,” Peter pointed out.

“There’s smart, and there’s smart,” Johnny said. “These were guys who built particle accelerators out of bits from an old stile, or attack girdles. Or portals to other dimensions.”

“Yeah, so? To hear Sue tell it, you were always pointing out what they were doing wrong, or what they had missed. You saw the things they, for all their smarts, didn’t.”

“… you’re just trying to cheer me up so I’ll make out with you in the Fantasticar.”

“Maybe. Is it working?”
