“Are you happy?” Karolina asked. “Here? With me?”
Xavin stretched slowly and pursed her lips, watching Karolina with a thoughtful gaze. “Why wouldn’t I be?” she asked.
“Because this is nothing like your old life.”
“Were you happy in your old life, Karolina?”
Karolina worried her lower lip between her teeth. “It was simpler,” she said, “before I knew my parents were evil aliens bent on global domination. Although I’m not really sure if what they were doing really counts as global domination.”
“That, my dear, is not an answer to my question.” Xavin ran a finger down Karolina’s cheek. “Were you happy?”
“No,” she confessed. “I made people think I was, but… no.”
“Are you happy now?”
“God, yes.”
