Author's Notes: I own nothing.

Xavin pulled up a chair and sat down directly in front of vaDanti. The young Majesdane jerked back, revulsion written on his face as if Molly had gone at it with a permanent marker, and Xavin pinched the bridge of her nose, fighting back the headache that always seemed to come when she had to deal with most Majesdanes.

“You remind me of a cousin of mine,” Xavin began. “She was very odd. She had all these ideas for making peace with your people, you see. She found you… endlessly fascinating, and she thought the war was a waste of time and resources better spent elsewhere. We mocked her for this without mercy.” Xavin studied her fingers, picking at something that had somehow gotten beneath her nails. “Then her father Ewe’frek was assassinated, and my cousin fell into mourning. She mourned for the rest of her life, in fact. You might remember her final act of mourning. The explosion was truly impressive, and when last I heard, nobody was able to return to the area because the bomb had contaminated it so. She mourned what she had lost so much that she chose to end her life while lashing out one last time at those she blamed.” She studied vaDanti’s face, looking for some sign that she was getting through to him.

With another small sigh, Xavin went on. “Does this not sound familiar to you at all? No? Fine, then I will say this so plainly that I cannot possibly be misunderstood.”

Xavin leaned forward, until she was almost nose to nose with vaDanti. “If you harm Karolina, if any of you take her from me, I will devote the rest of my life to tracking each and every Majesdane in the universe down and snuff them out. Every. Last. One.” Xavin’s smile… wasn’t. “One should always be wary of those who mourn in excess. They tend to be very unstable.”
