Jono slung the duffle bag over his shoulder and walked through the gates of Xavier's, head held high. He honestly never thought he would walk through those gates again. His boots dragged against the driveway as he eyed the Sentinels. Mr. Summers had briefed him on Sentinel Squad O*N*E, but the thought of those things on the grounds of the school still sent a shiver up his spine and made him reach reflexively for his scarf.
'The world has gone mad,' he said to no one. He would have frowned if he could have. Last time he'd been there, the school had been bustling with life. Children had been everywhere. Now it was so quiet, even with the 198.
It reminded him of the school in Snow Valley, in those rare moments when Angelo hadn't been Up To Something.
Jono stopped on the lawn and looked down at the innocuous green grass. This was where Angelo had died. 'You would have laughed to see me now, mate.' The faceless mutant adjusted his duffle bag and continued onward.
In a way, it was better to be here instead of Snow Valley. There were too many memories at the Massachusetts school. He would never have been able to face going back there. There would be too much of everything gone. Too much of Ange, and Ev, and Banshee.
Too much of Paige.
Ms. Frost had promised that his contact with Paige would be minimal. She'd mentioned that Jay was the only one sticking around, and that Paige was spending as little time at the school as possible. That was good. He'd liked the younger Guthrie when they'd met. He had a good ear. Jono vaguely recalled that the boy's mutation had involved wings.
The older telepath's words echoed in Jono's mind as he crossed the lawn.
You're wasting yourself.
You have a gift.
Now it was time to see if she was right.
