Jonothon Starsmore rolled over and pulled his pillow over his head. It was too bloody early for him to have to deal with anyone, let alone some wanker pounding on his door at this absolutely ungodly hour.

And yet, there was someone pounding away on the door to his flar, like the wanted to shake the whole building down.

'Whoever it is,' Jono decided as he untangled himself from his nest of blankets, 'has got some real acid.' He kicked the covers into the corner and wrinkled his nose. He needed to remember to throw it all into the wash later, before it started moving about on its own. He'd have plenty of time of it, since he was wide awake at seven in the bloody morning.

As an afterthought, he kicked the egg crate mattress into the corner too before shoving the curtain that marked the boundary between the bedroom and the living room aside. He glanced at the floor, hunting up a pair of boxers that weren't stained. A quick glance in the mirror reminded him that he needed a tee-shirt to cover that idiotic tattoo. At least he had finally gotten the hang of keeping the blue cow lips from coming back.

Though at this point, being frightening was sounding better and better. Whoever it was, they were in for a thrashing. He marched over to the door and flung it open with a growled "What?"

Personally, he thought a telepathic growl would have been much more effective, but one look at the three on the other side of the door told him that they wouldn't have been impressed anyway.

Three very familiar faces looked up at him, two disturbingly identical and once brilliant red. Jono looked down the hall, then back to the three faces. "Alright, where's your sister?"

"New York, I imagine," Nicole St. Croix volunteered. "Are you going to let us in?"

"Ought to slam the door on your face," Jono growled, stepping aside for the three girls. Nicole took Claudette's hand and lead her in, Penance trailing behind them like a faithful puppy. She stopped at Jono's feet, looking up at him curiously. He looked down at her, finally offering up a mental "Hullo, luv."

This seemed to satisfy the mute mutant, and she scampered around the cramped and dingy flat while Nicole sniffed disdainfully at the pile of dirty laundry in the corner. Claudette just stood next to her sister, looking at nothing. Jono wandered over to the ice box and pulled out an apple, which he gave to Penance.

"This simply will not do," Nicole announced, looking to her sister. "It's squalid! We cannot leave her here!"

"Hold on a minute, gel." Jono said, pulling out an apple for himself. "Just what are you going on about?"

Nicole scowled at Jono. "You could offer us refreshment," she sniffed.

"Ah, but you see, that would indicate I wanted you to stay and visit," Jono retorted. "Which is, in fact, the exact opposite of the truth."

"He is rude and messy and he smells. It is totally unacceptable!" the more vocal of the twins railed at her sister.

"He's also standing right here. And he would be more than happy to toss you out on your arse if you don't get to the bloody point," Jono said between bites.

Nicole snorted huffily. "Claudette has had the atrocious idea of leaving Penance with you so that she may acclimate herself to the outside world."

"That's the most idiotic idea I've ever heard," Jono said.

"My sister's ideas are not idiotic," Nicole hissed, "only poorly thought out. Clearly we are not leaving her here." She rounded on her twin. "He is an ill bred imbecile!"
"Course, I wouldn't leave Penny with the likes of you," Jono went on as if Nicole hadn't spoken. "Being with you for more than give minutes would be enough to drive anyone up the wall and out the window."

Claudette looked at Jono and smiled. "Yes."

And then they were gone. There was no flash of light or noise to announce their departure. One minute, Jono was glaring at the twins, the next they simply weren't there.

And Penance was sitting on his floor, peeling an apple with her long, sharp talons.

"Oh bugger.
