“I’ll trade you,” Alex said, watching the other boy carefully as he spoke, since he was prone to the odd outbursts of violence. Jet looked vaguely Asian, though he came from a reality that was far removed from Alex’s own. Jet watched him with deep suspicion, something Alex had fully expected. Jet and so far proved to be reluctant to share details from the events leading to his death, but Alex had picked up on one or two things.
“Trade me what?” the other boy finally asked, his eyes narrowed.
“You’re trying to watch out for your friends from this side, and I’m trying to watch out for mine. But maybe we’re too emotionally close to them to really see the big picture and get things that really need to be done, done. So, why don’t we switch groups?”
Jet chewed on the end of a straw that wasn’t really there (though it still existed for Jet thanks to a short lifetime of habit). “What’s in it for you?” he asked, still wary. “You don’t do anything without a reason.”
“A real chance at redemption,” Alex said. “Same as what you want. We’re both stalled as things are.”
Jet sucked on his teeth, still watching Alex as though he fully expected this to be some kind of trick. Finally, he grunted and said, “I’ll think about it.”
Alex waited until Jet’s back was turned to smile. Now it was only a matter of time.
